The Art of Calligraphy: Calligraphy is an art form that should not be lost as it is as unique to the individual as any other art form.

Diannah (aka Libby) is a Certified Instructor in Calligraphy through the Calligraphy Arts Guild of Toronto and taught Copperplate Script and Card Making in the Adult Education System in Etobicoke for over 10 years before moving to Muskoka, as well as working with clients through the Japanese Paper Place to produce wedding and other forms of invitations. Her lettering has been published in four books, and she has had 5 One-Woman Shows of her work.

She will introduce you to the tools and techniques used to produce the different styles and offer classroom instruction. Bring any calligraphy pens you may own or tools will be available to get you started. You do not need to buy any pens to attend this class. You will have a better understanding of the techniques and tools after the workshop. She can also give you direction on how to do Celtic Knotwork, White Vine Illumination, Rubber Stamp Carving, and other techniques that can be used for cards, scrapbooking, original or photocopied artwork.

If you wish to continue with instructions after this introduction, or already trained in some styles of Calligraphy, classes can be arranged on Thursday afternoon or evening, or private sessions made available. Classes are 3 hours long and the fee is $85 including HST. Ideally a class will contain 4 or more people. Photocopies will be given of lettering styles you wish to practice.

If you want to continue to practice on your own and want direction on your results, then Diannah will be available to assist you for a fee of $25 per person per hour.

You can register for her classes on the Upcoming Events page, or contact her if you are interested in attending a class.

How to Read Penmanship or Cursive Writing Penmanship or cursive writing became an art form and takes practice. Unfortunately students have not been taught how to read penmanship or cursive writing in most schools. If you have ever searched your Ancestry you will have found that many of the documents are written in cursive or penmanship. This class is to help read penmanship, and for those adventurous enough, to learn how to write cursive (meaning the letters are joined and have shallow branching). Class is 3 hours. Price is $85 including HST and includes handouts. Monday, August 8th from 12:30 to 3:30 pm

Copperplate Calligraphy This is a beautiful cursive writing style using a special pen nib handle, nib and ink, and is produced with weighted pressure and release on the strokes to produce thick and thin letter lines. It can be written with watercolor, gouache, stick ink or bottled carbon ink. The nib is flexible and produces thicker lines with pressure on the downstrokes and produces thinner lines on the upstrokes. It has a very meditative quality when writing it and is a very beautiful lettering style to look at. People love to just watch it being written as the strokes magically appear boldly then lightly. It is all in the pressure and release. This class deserves a full day of attention for those who can attend all day. Class will be 6 hours. 9:30 am to 4 pm. Price is $200 including HST. One holder and one nib with a small container of Higgins Eternal Ink is included in the price, as well as the handouts. Additional supplies will be available for purchase, such as a Manual that Diannah has created, of how to write this style. If you only want to attend a Half Day 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and work on this on your own, the fee is $113 including HST for a morning. Full day Monday, August 15th from 9:30 to 4 pm is $200 including HST.
